The Off-Road Assault On Mt. Mitchell is a 60 mile MTB race with 9,000+ feet of climbing.  From Old Fort you climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and just below Mt. Mitchell on beautiful Forest Service roads and unbelievable North Carolina singletrack.  Mt. Mitchell peaks at 6,684 feet and is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River.  ORAMM starts and finishes in the town of Old Fort, North Carolina and sits at around 1,400 feet.  Most of the climbing is on Forest Service roads while most of the singletrack points downhill.  ORAMM is one of the best marathon distance MTB courses in the US!

THIS RACE IS LIMITED BY THE US FOREST SERVICE TO 450 PARTICIPANTS.

Do not underestimate the extreme difficulty and danger of this MTB race.  The course is extremely demanding and travels over rugged terrain with extreme elevation changes.  The forest remains in its natural habitat.  It is not uncommon to see wildlife such as a wildcat or a black bear.  Be ready to cope with any circumstances!  Aid stations will help with safety matters, but it is the competitor's ultimate responsibility to insure his or her own safety.

A few course related facts: the 60 mile course record was set in 2019 by pro rider Jeremiah Bishop, who finished in 4 hours 17 minutes (we have since made changes to the course and need to record a new course record for 2024 and beyond).  One MTB rider completed the course with only one month of riding under his belt, however, this rider quit riding altogether after the race!  Others too have retired their MTB efforts after competing in this race.  This is not your typical MTB race.  Regardless of how you finish, you will have competed in the most exciting mountain bike race in the entire Southeast!!

2025 ROUTE IS TBD.  OUR FRIENDS AT G5 TRAIL COLLECTIVE HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD TO RESTORE THE TRAILS TO THEIR ORIGINAL GLORY.  WE ARE VERY HOPEFUL THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO DO OUR USUAL ROUTE IN 2025.  HOWEVER, IT ALL DEPENDS ON IF THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY WILL BE OPEN TO BICYCLES.  WE WILL DEFINITELY HOLD AN EVENT IN 2025, IT'S JUST UP IN THE AIR WHAT THE COURSE WILL LOOK LIKE AT THIS TIME.  LET'S MAKE THIS THE BIGGEST YEAR EVER AND GIVE BACK TO A STRUGGLING WNC AFTER THE HURRICANE.

Spectator Information

  • We encourage your friends and family members to cheer you on during the race.

  • Please take note, SPECTATORS ARE ALLOWED AT REST STOPS 1/4 & 2 ONLY.  Do not have your support meet you on the Blue Ridge Parkway or you will be DQ'd.

  • We have had issues with parking in the past at the rest stop locations, so there will be enforcement of parking guidelines to ensure a safe event for all involved.

  • Rest Stop 1/4

    • Spectators will need to park past the Brookside Baptist Church.  WE ARE NO LONGER PARKING ON THEIR PROPERTY.  We will have a staff member present to help guide you where to park.  The church had been very generous to allow us to park on their property in the past and still welcome us, but it is just easier for everyone to park on the side of the road past the church.

    • Parking will be on the side of the road past the church.  DO NOT PARK BEFORE the church along with not blocking any driveways or trailheads.

  • Rest Stop 2

    • NO parking on Curtis Creek Road.  Drive down Jarrett Creek Road to the newer Gateway Trail parking lot.  To get to this parking area, go down Jarrett Creek Road and once you cross the bridge you will turn to the left.  Be mindful of the racers coming up this road as you come in and out of the parking area.

  • Rest Stop 3

    • NO SUPPORT IS ALLOWED AT REST STOP 3 ON THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY.  You will be disqualified if you have support meet you there.  This is very important as it could jeopardize future permits with the Blue Ridge parkway.
