The Off-Road Assault On Mt. Mitchell is a 60 mile MTB race with 9,000+ feet of climbing.  From Old Fort you climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and just below Mt. Mitchell on beautiful Forest Service roads and unbelievable North Carolina singletrack.  Mt. Mitchell peaks at 6,684 feet and is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River.  ORAMM starts and finishes in the town of Old Fort, North Carolina and sits at around 1,400 feet.  Most of the climbing is on Forest Service roads while most of the singletrack points downhill.  ORAMM is one of the best marathon distance MTB courses in the US!

THIS RACE IS LIMITED BY THE US FOREST SERVICE TO 450 PARTICIPANTS.

Do not underestimate the extreme difficulty and danger of this MTB race.  The course is extremely demanding and travels over rugged terrain with extreme elevation changes.  The forest remains in its natural habitat.  It is not uncommon to see wildlife such as a wildcat or a black bear.  Be ready to cope with any circumstances!  Aid stations will help with safety matters, but it is the competitor's ultimate responsibility to insure his or her own safety.

A few course related facts: the 60 mile course record was set in 2019 by pro rider Jeremiah Bishop, who finished in 4 hours 17 minutes (we have since made changes to the course and need to record a new course record for 2024 and beyond).  One MTB rider completed the course with only one month of riding under his belt, however, this rider quit riding altogether after the race!  Others too have retired their MTB efforts after competing in this race.  This is not your typical MTB race.  Regardless of how you finish, you will have competed in the most exciting mountain bike race in the entire Southeast!!

We have made an Option A and Option B route for 2026 based on being able to use the Blue Ridge Parkway or not.  Our goal is to go back to our normal route with the Parkway and Heartbreak Ridge, but we are at the mercy of the BRP.  The section that we use is scheduled to open up in the fall of 2026.  However, the area that we use has no damage and we are hoping that we can get permission to use this for the event.

Once we know our final route, we will update this information.  We are trying to be as transparent as we can to keep you informed and for you to realize the issues we're dealing with from the damage of Hurricane Helene.

Spectator Information

  • We encourage your friends and family members to cheer you on during the race.

  • Rest Stop 1

    • Will be in the Old Fort Picnic Area (shown on course map above).  Parking will be limited so DO NOT double park or block the entrance into the picnic area.

  • Rest Stop 2

    • Will be at the trailhead of Deep Cove at the bottom of Jarrett Creek Road (shown on course map above).  You can access this location by parking in the new parking lot off of Curtis Creek Road and walking over to the aid station across the creek.  You can cross where the bridge was washed out or there is a rock walk way across the creek if the water isn't that high.

  • Rest Stop 3

    • Is at the trail head for Brenard Mountain Road (shown on course map above) and has very limited parking that we need to allow for our staff and emergency services, so we are asking that spectators come by bike and do not park at this aid station.

*2026 Aid Station locations will depend on which route option we use (see course information above for more information).  The locations above are based on Option B.  If you are reading this, we have not finalized our 2026 route between option A and option B.  Once we know, we will update this asap.
